What to Look for in Pickleball Clothing?

There are a few factors you want to keep in mind when selecting the proper pickleball attire. When you are choosing what to wear to play pickleball, the most important factors to consider in my mind are weather, comfort, and style.

Comfort: Wear what’s comfortable moving around on the court and something you don’t mind getting sweaty in. As we discuss further down, cotton is breathable but not very pleasant when you’re drenched in sweat.

Style: Do you want a matching outfit? How about some load colors that convey your unique characteristics? Go for it! You can match your pickleball paddle colors, shoes, shirts, or leggings. Bring your flavor to the pickleball court and let everyone know what kind of player you are.

Weather: This is essential in choosing the proper clothing; we dive deep into the best pickleball clothing for every type of weather.

How to Choose What to Wear to Play Pickleball

So depending on the time of year, your preferred material, and your unique style, there are things to consider when choosing the best pickleball outfit. I’ll highlight some of our favorites in every category.

Below, we give a full breakdown of everything you need to know and what factors pickleball players should consider.

Pickleball Clothes for Hot Weather

Pickleball is a great way to stay active and burn calories, even when it’s hot outside. However, it’s essential to dress appropriately for the weather conditions. If you’re playing in hot weather, you’ll want to wear pickleball clothing that helps you stay relaxed and comfortable and protects you from the sun.

Suppose it is hot outside; dress in light, breathable fabrics to help you stay cool. Some great quick-drying, moisture-wicking fabrics will keep you comfortable and looking good. I prefer short sleeves when playing, so I use some good sunscreen to cover my arms and legs (oh, and the back of my neck which I often forget)

While cotton is still considered the most breathable fabric, it can feel heavy (especially when sweaty), rough, and downright uncomfortable. That’s why I try and avoid wearing a regular t-shirt on the courts; in a pinch, it will do but not my preference.

Polyester/elastic is my top choice of material, as it helps to wick away sweat. Polyester is also quick-drying, soft, and relatively inexpensive. If your skin is sensitive to the sun, there are some UVF-protective pickleball clothes that you should consider.

Athletic shorts and skirts are also good, as they allow your skin to breathe and help keep you cool. If you’re playing in scorching weather, don’t forget to apply sunscreen!

Pickleball Clothes for Cold Outdoor Play

If it is cold outside, you may want to layer your clothing so that you can easily peel clothes off to adjust to temperature changes and gameplay. In my opinion, it’s always better to have the ability to pull off layers than not have enough. The bonus to layering your clothes when playing pickleball is in between games. The ability put clothes back on so you don’t freeze after working up a sweat on the court is huge.

Long sleeve shirts and light hoodies are an excellent way to layer your clothing. They are easily removable and usually have the elasticity and moisture protection you want.

What Shoes Do You Wear for Pickleball?

One of the most important things to consider when choosing shoes to play pickleball is comfort. You’ll be on your feet for long periods, so choosing a shoe that won’t leave you with painful blisters or sore muscles is important.

Look for shoes with shock absorption to protect your feet from the impact of constant movement and moisture-wicking fabric to keep your feet dry and comfortable. Arch support is also essential, especially if you have wide feet. Avoid shoes with narrow toe boxes, as they can cause cramped toes and uncomfortable pressure points.

Choose a shoe that offers a good rubber sole and a balance of all these features, and you’ll be able to play pickleball without worry.

Do You Need Specific Shoes for Pickleball?

That depends on you! Shoes are probably not the highest on your priority list if you’re starting to play pickleball. Some more prominent brands like Asics, Sketchers, and Addidas are beginning to move into the pickleball space and produce shoes, and I think I still need to be convinced that there is a reason to buy them over any other athletic shoes.

Yes, it would help if you had comfortable athletic shoes with grippy rubber soles, but I think specific pickleball shoes aren’t necessary.

Can I Wear Running Shoes for Pickleball?

Yes, you can, though I wouldn’t recommend it. Running and pickleball shoes may look similar, but they are pretty different. Running shoes have a different tread pattern and deeper tread grips than tennis shoes, which may cause you to slip on the court.

In addition, running shoes are not designed to provide the same level of ankle support and stability as “pickleball shoes.” For these reasons, wearing them on pickleball courts is not recommended.

If you are set on a new pair of shoes, buying a pair of tennis court shoes specifically designed for grip during lateral movements is best. Tennis court shoes will give you the better grip and support you need to play your best. Here are a few tennis shoes I like

Women's Apparel - What to Wear to Play Pickleball

Regarding pickleball attire, many women stick with tennis outfits for a classic look. However, there are also plenty of options for those who prefer a more casual style. Leggings and a sports bra combo offer comfort and breathability on the court and can easily be topped off with a tank top or t-shirt.

Another popular choice is performance shorts paired with a moisture-wicking athletic shirt. Whichever route you go, be sure to dress appropriately for the weather and choose fabrics that will keep you cool during intense gameplay.

At the end of the day, your clothing should enhance your performance while still allowing you to feel confident and comfortable on the court.

Women's Shirts

You’re looking for a loose-cut, comfortable material that will not get in your way when swinging your pickleball paddle and moving around the court. Here are a few great options for sleeveless tops, tank tops, long-sleeve, and polo shirts.

Sports Bras

When it comes to sports bras, finding the right fit is vital. Support is crucial, especially for high-impact activities like pickleball. Ensure the straps are adjustable and provide enough structure without digging into your shoulders.

Comfort should also be a top priority – look for soft fabrics and seamless designs to avoid irritation while on the pickleball court. Moisture-wicking materials can help keep sweat at bay and keep you cool during a workout.

And don’t forget about design – with so many options available, finding a sports bra that fits well and reflects your style can boost your confidence and make you even more eager to hit the court (female pickleball players, we’re looking at you!).

Ultimately, take your time finding the perfect sports bra for you – when it comes to support and comfort, investing in quality is worth it in the long run.

Women's Pickleball Shorts & Skirts

When picking the right women’s pickleball shorts or skirts, comfort and performance should be your top priorities. Opt for tennis shorts with a stretchy waistband and ample room for movement.

The material also plays an important role – look for Polyester or mesh fabrics that will keep you cool and dry on the court. Of course, aesthetic value also matters – choose colors and styles that make you feel confident and ready to dominate the game. Regarding functionality, look for features like built-in liners or pockets to hold other on-court essentials.

Don’t just settle for any old pickleball shorts – make sure you find ones that offer both function and flair! Here are a few of our top picks

Tennis Style Dresses

When it comes to tennis dresses, the most important factor is support. Look for straps that offer X-BACK support to distribute weight evenly and minimize bounce. In terms of comfort, a breezy soft fabric can prevent irritation and chafe, especially during intense gameplay.

Can You Wear Leggings to Play Pickleball?

One of the great things about pickleball is that there is no strict dress code on the court(unless you’re at a strict tennis club). However, some players prefer athletic clothing, like yoga pants or tennis skirts, for maximum comfort and flexibility. But just because yoga leggings are comfortable doesn’t necessarily mean they’re suitable for pickleball.

It all comes down to style and personal preference – some female players wear yoga pants without issue, while others feel more comfortable in a skirt, sports bra, and tank top combination. Ultimately, if your clothing allows you to move freely and comfortably on the court, feel free to wear whatever you want!

Ultimately, what matters most is that you’re comfortable and able to move freely while playing. So whether you wear leggings or shorts, show off your unique sense of style on the court!

Men's Pickleball Clothing - What to Wear to Play Pickleball

Regarding pickleball apparel for men, the most important thing is comfort. Opt for tennis shorts or athletic pants with a stretchy waistline for maximum movement and airflow. As for tee shirts or polos, choose ones made from a breathable fabric to keep you cool during intense matches.

As far as style goes, classic tennis whites are always a good choice but feel free to have fun with colorful patterns and designs. For cooler weather, a long-sleeve option made from lightweight material and moisture-wicking can provide extra coverage without sacrificing comfort.

Men's Pickleball Shirts

When it comes to picking out the right pickleball apparel, comfort and maneuverability are key. Look for materials like polyester and spandex that offer flexibility and breathability. Here are our top choices of short-sleeve and long-sleeve t-shirts.

Men's Pickleball Shorts

Lightweight fabrics also help to keep you cool during intense match-ups. And if you tend to sweat a lot, opt for shorts with quick dry technology to keep you comfortable throughout the game. Of course, don’t forget about style – find colors and designs that not only make you feel good but also allow you to easily spot your partner on the court.

Other Important Pickleball Accessories

Finding the right equipment can be overwhelming with all the choices. Here are our favorite choices of all the pickleball accessories you will want.

Pickleball Gloves

While most players don’t use gloves I thought I’d add a few things to look for in perfect pickleball gloves.

Look for leather material that is both lightweight and quick drying to ensure a comfortable fit during your game. Next, consider whether you prefer full-finger or half-finger gloves.

And don’t forget about grip! Make sure to choose a glove with a tacky grip to give you extra control during those intense moments on the court. Ultimately, there is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to pickleball gloves.

Pickleball Hats

In picking out the perfect hat or visor for your Pickleball game, comfort, function, and style should be top priorities. Quick dry fabrics can help keep sweat at bay, and don’t forget about sun protection! Many hats and visors now offer UPF 50+ protection, keeping your head and face shielded from harsh UV rays.

With these factors in mind, you’ll be sure to find a Pickleball hat or visor that not only looks good on the court but keeps you comfortable and protected as well. Here. are a few fun pickleball hats and visors we like

Pickleball Bags and Backpacks

When picking a Pickleball bag or backpack, there are a few important things to consider. First and foremost, you want to ensure it has enough space to fit all your gear, including multiple paddles and balls.

A spacious main compartment, as well as additional pockets for smaller items like water bottles and snacks, is ideal. It’s also important to find a bag that is lightweight yet durable – after all, nobody wants to lug around a heavy bag on the court. Here are our top choices

There are some excellent choices from straight-up protection to stylish sunglasses; here are a few to consider.
